Resolutions Suck…

Resolution suck the life right out of me. Every year I try to set some good resolutions for the upcoming year, only to let myself down come February 1. As the new year approaches I have been doing some thinking in regards to this years resolutions. I have been watching what everyone else was saying and it seems the overarching resolutions are the same year in and year out. Allow me to share with you my top 2.

Loose Weight

Read the Bible More

As I thought more about it I noticed these were not resolutions. These were in fact goals to a greater resolution. These two as resolutions are like using a cough suppressant to eliminate a cold- it will only hide symptoms not rid them. The problem with these resolutions is they truly will suck the life right out of you because they are only symptoms to a greater “problem” we are dealing with.

The dictionary defines Resolution like this: a firm decision to do or not to do something.

A firm decision speaks of something that is unwavering- to resolute means to decide to change and that decision is unwavering. This is not the reality of the resolutions I have made for years. I have not resolved anything- I have in stead set unreachable symptomatic goals.

Allow me to go a little deeper.

  1. Loose weight is a symptom of something that is far deeper than a few extra pounds in the mid-section (I think of it as comfort weight). Loosing weight should be a goal to a much bigger resolution. Looking in the mirror and not liking what you see is the issue. It happened with time and developed habits. The only way to loose weight would be to change your habits. Shame on us for thinking that by stating we want to lose weight will automatically take of 10lbs. We have to take a more drastic approach to this resolution. By limiting it to weight we will only treat a symptom and not the root. The resolution should in fact be to have a better self-image. To put a more spiritual term on it I would say this resolution would better be fit as “Glorify God with My Body.” A goal in this resolution would of coarse be to lose weight but it would also include a lifestyle change that would drastically change your life and you just might see the change you have been looking for. Remember who’s image you were created in

Genesis 1:27- So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

  1. Read the Bible more is a good resolution. By just reading the Bible more doesn’t hit the root issue. The problem with this resolution is if you miss one day there is a great potential for beating your self up and ruining your resolution. A desire to read the Bible more stems from a desire to know God more. Knowing God more encompasses more than just Bible reading. Bible reading is a good goal to an even greater resolution- “To Know God More.” Here is the kicker as I strive after this resolution than my self-image completely changes.

1 John 2:3-6- Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.  He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

Resolution that suck the life out of you are resolution based on theory and not principle. In theory it is good to lose weight but it will be hard if you continue to have a poor self image. If your principle is to know God more than the practice of this will naturally be to read your Bible more. So my two resolutions will be:

Glorify God With My Body

Know God More

As you think about the new year GET EXCITED! God has great things in store for you. Set RESOLUTIONS that will change your life…forever!

Philippians 1:6- being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;
